Develop Your Information Strategy

Strategy may be one of the most overused words in business literature. It is applied to everything from product development to coffee breaks. Yet there is a valid place for strategic thinking in many areas of your business and the handling of information is most definitely one of them.

The first (and perhaps most vital) part of information strategy is ensuring the trustworthiness of the data on which you will be making decisions. I talk about this in the Dealing with Data portion of this site.

You must also think about the parts of your company that are being influenced by the information. It helps to divide your company into two broad sections; continuity and change.

In continuity portion of your company, are all of the routine activities that allow the company to run and serve customers. These include all of the activities that support the manufacture and distribution of your products.

The change portion of the company is a bit more difficult to define because it lives within the cracks and crevasses of the continuity portion. Basically though, the change portion of your organization is responsible for making things better. Change comes from product development, kaizen and other activities and people who are responsible for ensuring that things don’t just go on the way that they always have.
