Simplify

Simplifying the process means that all unnecessary steps are eliminated and the route from order to the shop floor is as direct as possible. I am amazed, time and again, at companies where every single order has to be routed through engineering. This is true even if all Engineering does is bless the order and pass it on.

Usually this happens because no one except engineering can tell if the order is sufficiently unique to require attention. Better initial definition of your products will help eliminate this uncertainty and help ensure that only orders that require special attention are routed to engineering.

Unneeded detours into Engineering are just one example of way-stations that many manufacturers erect which provide no benefit, but lap-up lead-time. Job reviews, sign-off sheets, manual purchase requisitions and other administrivia just serve to rob time from the real work of getting the order out the door.

Obviously eliminating these non-value-adding steps requires effort and time but are well worth doing. I have years of experience in helping my customers review their processes, revise their assumptions and eliminate unneeded bottlenecks in the pursuit of recovering lead-time.
