StandardizeMost of my customized product manufacturers are what I refer to as “same-as-but” shops. They will ship the same product that they did yesterday except for a few differences. In most cases the differences occur at the edge, not the heart of the design.
"If you think of standardization as the best that you know today, but which is to be improved tomorrow; you get somewhere."
Yet when asked; to a person the key people in these companies will tell you that “everything that we do is different.” This isn’t true in any meaningful sense, but they absolutely believe it. Worse, this thinking leads them to think and work in terms of job, job, job; not product, product, product. As a result they lose the opportunity to standardize their offerings at the component level and only customize those aspects of the product that truly require customization. Component standardization offers your organization a number of opportunities including the ability to effectively learn from your mistakes, reduce engineering content, reduce lead-time and deliver better quality. By standardizing at the component level you can build predictability into your manufacturing processes as well, which is a huge boon when trying to use Visual’s scheduler. Most importantly, by standardizing at the component level you eliminate the need for engineering to review and alter drawings for the components. This frees your engineers for other, more productive, activities. In effect you get to customize more by customizing less. While Visual Enterprise does the custom products dance very well, it is also a powerful tool for helping you achieve a surprising degree of standardization in your product lines. I am Kurt B. Carr and I have years of experience in teaching companies how to use Visual Enterprise as a tool to operate effectively and achieve success.
